Documents you need to scrap a car

Having the papers sorted before pickup is what makes it a one-visit job. Here’s the checklist, and what to do if something is missing.

In short

  • Keep the RC, the owner’s Aadhaar or PAN, and bank details in the owner’s name ready.
  • If the car was on loan, you need the bank’s NOC first.
  • You get a Certificate of Deposit from the scrapping facility. Keep it for your next car.

The checklist

  • Registration certificate (RC)The original. Lost it? It can usually still be done with a declaration.
  • Owner’s IDAadhaar or PAN of the person named on the RC.
  • Bank NOC, if the car was on loanThe loan has to be closed and the bank’s name removed first.
  • Bank details for paymentA cancelled cheque or account details in the owner’s name.

A few photos of the car help too, including the odometer and any damage. They let us confirm your price before the tow truck comes.

If something is missing

The RC is lost

It can usually still be done with a declaration. The facility checks the car’s details on VAHAN. Tell us on the call and we’ll explain what your case needs.

There’s still a loan on the car

The loan has to be closed and the bank’s name removed from the registration first. Get the no-objection certificate (NOC) from your bank, and we take it from there.

The owner has passed away

The family can still scrap the car. We’ll guide you through the legal heir papers the facility needs.

The car is registered in another state

That’s fine. A registered facility can scrap a car registered anywhere in India.

What you get back

  • A Certificate of Deposit when the car is handed over at the scrapping facility. This is the one that gets you the tax concession on your next vehicle.
  • A Certificate of Vehicle Scrapping once the car has been dismantled.
  • Payment by bank transfer, in the owner’s name.

Whoever scraps your car, make sure you receive the Certificate of Deposit. It’s your proof that the car went for legal scrapping.

After the car is gone

  • Take the FASTag off and ask your bank to close it.
  • Tell your insurer. You may get part of an unused premium back.
  • Keep the Certificate of Deposit safe for your next car.
